Think of it as part of Mam Gaia's - always pretty ruthless - correction of population overshoots. - Archived Message

We're doing literally nothing effective about our own current overshoot episode - though we could, and humanely too - so inevitably it falls back to Mam's ruthless, but always effective, natural methods. By many such syndromes as the ones you describe, T, our birthrate will be eased gently - if we're really lucky - just a percentage point or two below our death rate, and will stay there for a while, whilst the problem gets fixed. These mothering deprivations are part of all that. Rotten shame. But inevitable, so long as we go on ignoring the hard realities. Expect the appearance of a whole suite of such natural culling mechanisms; plummeting male fertility being another mechanism of the suite.
