I know you like to believe, RG, that this AS smear campaign has zero or negligible influence on people outside the media/Westminster bubble, but I'm not so sure. First, the constant day-in day-out drip-drip-drip AS smear campaign will have some effect, as being a "given" that Labour is institutionally AS and racist. Even now, in discussions and debates, it is just said in passing that "Of course we all know that Labour and Corbyn are anti-Semitic" and it is not even challenged. Second, you might suppose that even were Labour perceived as AS, it would have little impact on the population at large, who would shrug their shoulders and remain indifferent to it. But personal anecdotal evidence from Jewish friends of mine (who support the Palestinian cause and vote Labour) informs me that some of their Jewish friends have said they cannot vote Labour ever again. Yes, I know this isn't a scientific survey and should be treated with caution, but it shocked me that some of these people were taken in by the AS smear campaign when I had assumed, wrongly, that they would dismiss it out of hand as being ridiculous, given Corbyn's lifelong record. But they didn't. |
