I have read that the rainforest in South America is in a clyclical relationship with savanna during periods of glaciation at which point there is greening in the sahara. Can't find a good reference - this papsr refutes or balances the story. Not quite an answer to your question but it does suggest as with all things the forest is not fixed but dynamic.
