suites of the future are likely to be enforced reversions to what currently we'd call antique. One thing your grandchildren should stake their lives on is that the hyper-techy toys available now will be wistful memories in thirty years or so, already by then turning into legends.

Quite apart from all the other Synergising Global Crises, the energy bottleneck hoving up on the near-term horizon on its own guarantees this global devolution away from our present hallucinations about techno-narcissism - putting it in Jim Kunstler's pungent coinage.

Nothing in any society functions without driving energy of some kind, from somewhere. In this industrial techno-worshipping culture of ours, its fossil hydrocarbons, now on the skids, and with - literally - zero credible replacement power source actually available to us, outside the realms of sci-fi. Energy is the critical Crisis. The other Crises simply provide the belt-and-braces back-up to guarantee the inevitability of the Long Descent.

We have literally no actually, soberly credible way out of this jam; literally nothing that can keep us at our current ludicrous splurge level of energy use, whatever moonshine the Bastani clones may babble. Let them explain, in the sort of practical detail that enables engineers to begin constructing workable prototypes, where the power will come from. In the non-StarTrek real world, there's - literally - nothing. What can't continue - won't.
