To be sure, it's hazardous extrapolating from one figure. But Bolsonaro only took power under a year ago and has reportedly been lifting environmental restrictions, and the year isn't over yet. In the last two years the number was low. The claim of an 83% increase since last year partly reflects a low 2018 figure. Were the low figures in the last two years as a result of environmental concerns or policy in that period? Some background knowledge would be useful. The existing amount of Amazon burning is a concern generally, that should be part of the story. Maybe politics has shifted the focus of the world reaction but with some justification given Bolsonaro's attitudes and policy towards environment and the rights of the indigenous people. 2016 106404 2017 73413 2018 53935 2019 99590 and counting
