Peterson performs quite badly on this, I agree. But the bigger tragedy is how ideologues pounce on this to sort of 'prove' that Marx is right and Peterson is wrong. Historical Materialism is a profoundly bad philosophy because it radically distorts ones take on nature and Human Nature while destroying (or perverting, and in many cases inverting) traditional wisdom. Note, Marx does indeed talk frequently about nature but misreads it, and inflates ridiculously the value of labour. Also, a sound philosophy of course takes into consideration the material conditions, but the ideological philosophy of Historical Materialism emphasizes it pathologically, which is a (ahem) natural tendency of the resentful and the faithless. But perhaps the ultimate catastrophic tragedy of these framed debates (like the New Atheism vs. Religion debates) is it distracts from the present, accelerating tyranny happening right under our noses, and fuelled primarily by well-meaning useful idiots (from the 'progressive' left and liberals!), goaded and baited by the very enemies they seek to overthrow! turtleman
