Haaretz article on Our Boys Archived Message

This is an Israeli show billed by Haaretz as concerning the “most painful week” in Israels recent history. That was the beginning of Protective Edge, seven rather painful weeks in Palestinian history.

Nevertheless I have some hopes for it because the name HBO usually a kite mark. By freeing itself from crasser commercial mainstream mechanisms HBO began with The Sopranos a kind of revolution among subscription channels. Once upon a time British TV drama series were edgier than any US output.

I don’t think political honesty is to be expected on the subject of Israel, a subject on which most US artists cannot even think the truth let alone tell it. Israeli writers sometimes have freer minds. But I expect enough dramatic and psychological honesty to make it worth watching. I expect it will not lapse into the faux candour of US mainstream output. (Yes we do behave cruelly - but only because we were driven to do so by people who naturally behave that way.)
