Manchester police give XR free rein to close Deansgate Archived Message

I was discussing with a friend the close-down of Deansgate in central Manchester (for those who don't know, Deansgate is the second main shopping thoroughfare which runs between Victoria station and the Hilton Hotel) and we tried to think of another protest group or movement which would have been permitted by the police to shut down the centre of a major city FOR FOUR DAYS.

We couldn't think of one which would have been given official permission (surely from up above, a political decision) and we were bamboozled as to why this has happened. I know it has been discussed here before, in regard to the London closure of Oxford Street, so what is the explanation and what are the reasons behind it?
