We seem to live in time of extraordinary conformity in public life. I often think we're living in a Neo Vicorian or Neo Puritan age. It's typical that the two voices raised about Assange's plight and terrible fate, are two icons who began their careers in the 1960's, that era of freedom and radicalism. Where are the young rebels in journalism and music who dare to stand up and be counted? A lot of the conformity is linked to the dark mire of Thatcherism that's swallowed so much of our freedoms. That's on the right, but the socalled 'left' have their part too. Their ghastly political correctness. Their obsessions with gender and identity politics and their crass desire to control what people are allowed to say and think. Their wanton destruction of the power of language by demanding that it conform to a dull-headed political agenda.
