.... internationally famous whistleblowers, particularly in reference to the information provided by the Guardian newspaper in the UK., and comment on this statement, "Despite the obvious similarities of these two men, their history and their actions, the treatment of them in the Guardian newspaper appears inconsistent and contradictory." Your assignment should provide a reasoned commentary on this statement, using the available Guardian articles on the internet, and other internet available information and commentary. You should also allot some space to informed speculation as to why, if confirmed, these differences are evident and what benefit does the Guardian gain by holding them?

A starting point for your studies might be today's Guardian article on Mr. Edward Snowden, a US citizen who lives in exile in Russia. Wanted in the US to face espionage charges.

And another earlier article. this time about Mr Julian Assange, an Australian citizen, presently detained on bail jumping charges in the Belmarsh prison, London and subject of an extradition request by the US on charges of aiding and abetting espionage.

In your comparison and contrast you may wish to include such matters as to the Guardian's description of the character of these two men, the nature of the crimes they've been accused of, their present circumstances, their relationship to the Guardian newspaper etc.

As part of your essay, you will need research and comment on the ownership of the Guardian newspaper, the work of its reporters and editors , and the nature of the Guardian's overall political stance over a number of years.

The assignment should be around five thousand words, and should be returned to the Lighthouse News Open College of Political Commentary by 4 pm, Friday, 27th September.

Marks will be gained by keeping to factual accounts, clear reasoning and clear English, avoiding common logical fallacies and avoiding ad hominems. Further marks will be gained by ensuring a robust ethical stance to your writing. There will be a valuable prize awarded for the best assignment, which will be two pints of beer and a pub meal at your favourite local, to be accompanied at the table by John Pilger and Jonathan Cook, who have kindly agreed to put aside the time to meet you for two hours of convivial conversation, and George Monbiot, but he hasn't yet replied to our several requests.
