https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2019/09/14/pers-s14.html If, as I contend, 'democracy' is going down the toilet in the UK, then in the USA it's already been flushed down the tube, and the Democrats, we are told, are supposed to be the good guys! I'm not sure, increasingly, that 'democracy' really works in the kind of societies we live in. It's not that I'm against 'democracy' per se. Only, when one sees how easy it's become to manage, control and manipulate public opinon, I have my doubts. It's strking that the two leading western democracies are led by raving demagogues like Trump and Johnson. How did we arrive here, and perhaps of more vital importance, how on earth do we get out of here? Is the era a bourgeois democracy over as an effective and functioning system that can things done? Look at the massive challenges we face in relation to the environment alone, yet all 'democracy' seems to be good for is making war. |
