That may well be true, but the EU has become much more than a mere customs union hasn't it? Looking back at Europe's history I think there are two really big trends. Either there are 'empires' that hold things together and dominate, Rome for example or Austria-Hungary; or there's fragmentation and we're soon at each others throats and the mass slaughter begins, like the Thiry Years War, or the long battle against Revolutionary France, or the long war of the first half of the 20th century to keep Germany in its place, which eventually failed. I'm not really a tremendous fan of the current EU configuration, even though I've personally massively benefitted from it, like almost everyone I know; only what concerns me is the alternatives which might emerge if the EU were to break apart which could, given our history, be much worse.
