I think there's a central problem with both Labour and the Tories; their both uneasy coalitions of differing political views, or factions, that were only held together by the 'strangeness' of the British electoral system. None of them had a particularly solid or coherent political ideology. Now, things are changing. Brexit, among other things, has undermined the old political system, not least FPTP, by injecting a dose of direct democracy into the body politic and challenges the legitimacy of the old system. This, by itself, could have profound implications going forward. So, we seem to be seeing the 'glue' that held the old party system weakening and spilts are appearing all over the place.
