I post this here because the last working class hero has repeatedly called me a murderer for having an abortion at age 15. And what has happened since seems relevant.
So 11 years after that, I did give birth to a boy and two years later, to a girl. Both of whom I raised into adulthood. In March of this year my son had surgery to remove part of his intestine which had a tumour, thought to not be dangerous but better removed. The day of the surgery, he developed severe acute pancreatitis (quite possibly enabled by a lifetime of binge drinking - a dozen or more beer most Friday nights without eating - beware youngsters) and multiple organ failure in the next few days. They managed to save him but what we and they didn't know or wouldn't acknowledge is that he was dying from the day of the first surgery. He spent from then till now - 7 months - in the hospital, including his 38th birthday in April. So, after suffering horrible pain and indignities and basically his intestines rotting from the inflammation, he died in surgery on Monday. He never really walked again. Using a wheelchair, he got home once in that time for a few hours, and had one other outing to the farmers' market.
I have always tried in everything to give more than I took but at that I have totally failed. His care cost our public health care system probably millions of $. Multiple surgeries, MRI's, CT scans, x-rays, drugs, liquid nutrition (he never was able to really get back to eating solid food), doctors, nurses, respirologists, physiotherapists, pain specialists, support staff.
So my point is - I'm talking to you Mr. Last Working Class Hero - things aren't always black and white. And maybe there is justice. Or something. Can't wait for your accusations of sophistry or comparing apples to oranges or whatever else you come up with.
