"The Assassination of Robert Maxwell" by Gordon Thomas is a great read on that side of things. It goes into a lot of Maxwell's dealings with the security services (PROMIS, etc.). "Foreign Body: The Secret Life of Robert Maxwell" by Russell Davies reveals how he worked for the British spooks for quite a while, and possibly the Russians, before the Israelis. It doesn't go into the death side of things so much as the other book but covers his life with the spooks much more. There's plenty of stange things about that last voyage of Maxwell's (the crew all being new and unknown who were brought in at suspiciously short notice, the "botched" autopsy and embalming before a proper autopsy could be done) but there's no doubt he had a long list of enemies, both state and personal. Ari Ben Menashe's book is an amazing read but I think you have to take a pinch of salt with it. He definitely isn't a faker (the amount of flak directed at him shows that) but I believe Seymour Hersh found that he had "gilded" quite a lot of what he told him during the writin of "The Samson Option" and he is fairly critical of him these days. But he was definitely an Israeli spook involved in a lot of dirt (he's mentioned extensively in the Russel Davies book) and "Profits of War" is a crazy read. Witney Webb has become one of the best diggers out there; relentlessly attacking the stories that need telling and always providing a ton of sources and links. She's great.
