    this is something of a literary point of view, the sort of thing a wealthy liberal like Joachim Fest would write. The reality was more intermittent and brutal, which is to say, the life of poor people, pawns of the state, was extended along the social structure. That said, the richest bastards in Germany in 1900 and those in 2000 have surprisingly similar surnames. Some forms of continuity are more continuous than others.
