For a guy who's been around the FCO block for most of his working life, his naivety on some issues is extraordinary. The EU is very nervous of regional independence movements - if Catalonia goes, well, there's a whole host of others waiting in the wings. I suspect the SNP have badly misread the eye-of-dog and toe-of-frog runes if they think the EU will roll out the welcome wagon should they win Indy Ref 2.
