12th October 2019 Sir, A catastrophe is unfolding in northeast Syria that has the potential for thousands of Isis fighters to create terror once again in the capitals of the world, including London and Brussels (“Turkey steps up airstrikes as 60,000 civilians flee”, Oct 11). The unintended consequence of an East-West proxy war in northern Syria should be to stimulate Nato members into action. I have spent much time in northern Syria over the past five years and was a chemical weapons adviser to the Iraqi Kurd Peshmerga in their fight with Isis. If nothing changes, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces are likely to turn to Assad and Putin for support, which could bring a Nato country into conflict with a Russian-supported force. Add the volatility of Iran and a rightly nervous Israel, and an incendiary mixture is created. It is time for the UK and EU to show their collective mettle through Nato and step into the US vacuum to provide a buffer between Turkey and the Syrian Kurds. This threat to world peace deserves our full attention. Colonel (ret’d) Hamish de Bretton-Gordon Adviser to Union of Syrian Medical Charities and to Doctors Under Fire; former Nato commander https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/our-duty-to-stop-the-bombing-of-the-kurds-qvljww2gk He would just love to be back in the thick of it.
