Trump decision to abandon key ally leaves Kurds vulnerable to Turkish attack Despite helping the US defeat Islamic State, the US president has abandoned his allies to Turkey, which sees them as insurgents. 17 October 2019 Image: Syrian Kurds gather around a US armoured vehicle Taken at face value, the late night statement from the White House is extraordinary and alarming in multiple ways. In two blunt paragraphs, released at 11pm on Sunday night, President Donald Trump abandoned Kurdish-led forces who have been a key ally in the fight against the Islamic State. At the same time the statement effectively endorses a Turkish incursion of a strip of land in northern Syria. The statement read: "Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into Northern Syria. The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation, and United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial "Caliphate," will no longer be in the immediate area." /.. https://news.sky.com/story/trump-leaves-kurds-allies-in-is-battle-vulnerable-to-turkish-attack-11829961
