Note that the author of this piece, Godfree Roberts is an experienced Western-originated China-hand, and is a considerable enthusiast both for China now, and for the whole interconnectivity project which he describes here (so apply appropriate discounts!) Godfree also appears to be unaware of the overweening power of the Synergising Global Crises, and how they will be the force majeure in all our plans for the next couple of centuries. Some of the growthforever forecasts which he repeats are obviously over-optimistic, once the SGCs are factored in.(The actual, nitty-gritty energy supplies to drive everything that he forecasts, for example. There's a non-negotiable supply-crunch a little way ahead with that matter; and with several others.) Still, on the basic principle that the next hundred years or so are just as inherently unpredictable as any future time, we can't tell just what will eventuate from the collision between the current Eurasian ferment and the global ecogeophysical realities.
