Putin has invested in splitting up the EU (esp. in the east), using Britain as leverage may well have been part of the reason to support (at least in part), Brexit...perhaps he thought his relationship with Trump and America generally would be better than the one he now has...certainly continued relationships with nationalist (and therefore, unfortunately often, far right extremists), in Eastern Europe (esp.), suggests that Putin favours anything that destabilises the Union...this is fair enough, it's part of policies that have been more-or-less forced on his administration by Europe's federalist empire building....but this conception of Russian foreign policy can only be fully reached and properly understood if one embraces an anti-expansionist stance with regard to the Wider European Adventure....many socialists, because they don't like institutions which challenge the international, use the "businessman's club" accusation against the EU as a reason for not supporting it... because they do not respect the need for international consensus politics (manifested in federation), they of-course fail to provide the European Union we should be a member of with the firm footing it needs.. The Ukraine, Greece, Turkey and the assimilation of the other Baltic and Eastern European states was primarily a NATO exercise..one that Putin sensibly opposes...but let's not credit the Russian oligarchy with anything more...they are more like New Tsars than New Commissars...
