    Completely agree, the rottenness of the system is evident in the dolts who get through Archived Message

    MPs really have two main functions; to represent their constituents and to be legislators - that is to scrutinise legislation and to understand its impact on the people of the UK. Some MPs, but not, alas, all, do a reasonable job in their constituency work. Very few, however, seem to realise the importance of the legislative aspects of the role. No political party, as far as I know, actually looks for the skills needed to scrutinise legislation in potential parliamentary candidates. The consequences are apparent - there's a lot of bad law and bad policies on the statute books. The system is rotten - it produces the wrong people who do a bad job. And, yeah, some real dolts seem to slip through.
