Propaganda outfits scratch their heads over how best to control messages Archived Message

If one understands that "First Draft News" is a US (CIA?)-funded outfit that goes around the world running workshops telling people how to 'recognise' and 'prevent' 'disinformation', then one sees their dilemmas played out in this article> https://firstdraftnews.org/latest/closed-groups-messaging-apps-and-online-ads-the-new-battlegrounds-of-disinformation/
They quite like the fact that citizens can have (semi) private conversations on Whatsapp or via FB groups, but actually they'd really, really love to creep in and access those individual citizens' private conversations as well, to check everyone's thinking correctly. Awkwardly, that desire undermines their own narrative about citizens' rights and 'right to privacy'.
And what's the etiquette for 'perception managers' when they insert themselves into groups on closed messaging threads, hoping to win friends, influence minds... or snitch?

"First Draft News: How do you find these groups? Once you find them, should you join them? Should you be transparent about who you are when you join a group on a closed messaging app? Can you report on information that you’ve gleaned from these groups? Can you automate the process of collecting comments from these types of groups?"
