the venom has been unbelievable between those saying "this is not the time to talk about climate change" and those saying "this IS the time to talk about it" - and the latter are dead right, because as soon as the pressure is off no-one will have the anger and the impetus any more, and be too busy about finding who was to blame - power companies, greenies stopping "fuel reduction" burning and locking up the national parks. It is better than ten years ago, when "catastrophic" conditions were invented, and 175 people died in a Victorian bushfire. Even though it was unusually hot and windy and dry, no-one ever mentioned climate change at the time, and certainly not afterwards. The interviewer on the ABC Murphy talks about also interviewed Greens spokesman Adam Bandt, and gave him a hard time, but it worked because Bandt was able to come up with convincing defences for his claim that the Gov was responsible for the deaths of people through its failure to act. Macdonald asked him repeatedly to confirm that stopping coal emissions today would have an effect on the bushfires today... as if! There is a little problem though, which is that people have got themselves into something of a climate panic, which probably goes beyond necessity. Down here in Victoria it is as unseasonally cold as it is warm up there in QLD. |
