Corbyn and McDonnell KEEP ON GIVING THE WRONG REPLIES. The very worst thing you can do is to talk (as McDonnell did on a Sky interview) about "rooting out" antisemitism in the Labour party. You can't root out something that isn't there to begin with -- but it only confirms what your enemies are accusing you of. And Corbyn keeps on giving the same lame, ineffectual answers: "We have robust systems in place ... we will pursue those who are anti-semitic ... there is no place for racists in the Labour party ... blah blah blah. All of it useless. He should say to any interviewer who raises AS in the Labour party (like Kuensberg did in today's interview): "Give me the names of the people in the Labour party who are anti-Semites. I want you to name them for me, now, this minute. I don't want vague accusations of stuff you've heard second- and third- and fourth-hand. Name them and tell me what they have said or done which you regard as anti-semitic." The second tack he and McDonnell should have taken is to fight back with the poll comparing AS attitudes between Labour supporters and Guardian readers. The two sets of figures were almost identical. In some instances the Guardian readers held more dubious AS views than the Labour people -- and both sets of figures were in single digits for the most part. Having said that, I despair at intelligent people like le Carre and William Boyd (who I have a great deal of time for as writers -- especially Boyd) being taken in and suckered by this totally blatant AS smear campaign. Their level of naivety and ignorance is truly staggering. These are writers who do masses of in-depth research for their fiction, who are naturally sceptical and astute in their judgements, and to see them so utterly wrong-headed is really had to accept and believe.
