The Green Day song, 'Welcome to Paradise', was also written about Oakland Ca. though it sounds like things have gotten worse there since the early 90s...
'Dear Mother Cant you hear me whining? It's been 3 whole weeks Since I have left your home This sudden fear has left me trembling Cuz now it seems that I am out here on my own & I'm feelin so alone
Pay attention to the cracked streets & the broken homes Some call it slums some call it nice I wanna take you through a wasteland I like to call my home Welcome to paradise
A gunshot rings out at the station Another urchin snaps & left dead on his own It makes me wonder why I'm still here For some strange reason it's now feelin like my home & I'm never gonna go
Pay attention to the cracked streets & the broken homes Some call it slums some, call it nice I wanna take you through a wasteland I like to call my home Welcome to paradise
Dear Mother Can you hear me laughing? It's been 6 whole months Since I have left your home It makes me wonder why I'm still here For some strange reason it's now feelin like my home & I'm never never gonna go
Pay attention to the cracked streets & the broken homes Some call it slums, some call it nice I wanna take you through a wasteland I like to call my home Welcome to paradise Paradise....'
'Song meaning and composition
The lyrics of the song were written by Billie Joe Armstrong, and the music by Armstrong with Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. It is based on the band's experience moving out of their parents' houses and into an abandoned house in Oakland, California where the band members, along with a number of others, lived without paying rent. The house was quite broken-down but to them it became home, and this feeling is described in the song.
Billie Joe Armstrong said this of the song:
It's about West Oakland, living in a warehouse with a lot of people, a bunch of artists and musicians, punks and whatever just lived all up and down, bums and junkies and thugs and gang members and stuff that just lived in that area. It's no place you want to walk around at night, but it's a neat warehouse where you can play basketball and stuff.' - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welcome_to_Paradise
One of my first sniffs of punk rock, listened to 'Dookie' and 'Kerplunk' repeatedly on a cassette walkman for about an entire summer. This song was my favourite (though my tastes have moved on!) Ah, nostalgia...
