I have an HSBC 'basic accout'. I use it to cost them (admittedly small, but real) losses - Archived Message

Twisted story: I was contacted by some iffy NGO outfit who said they had pension contributions collected from me during my first teaching job in 1959, and did I want them back now? I said yes. They played silly buggers and claimed that they could only repay me through my own high-street bank account (which I didn't have). They wouldn't even tell me how much it was. (28 quid, FFS! If I'd known that upfront I wouldn't have bothered) I cycled into the nearest town that has bank branches in it, and faced with the significant gradient of the main drag there, I simply picked the bank at the bottom of the hill, which happened to be HSBC. I know, I know. But is there one of them - apart from Triodos perhaps - which isn't run by a bunch of arrant crooks? And Triodos would only give me an account if I opened it by depositing a cheque with them from some other bank account of mine - which I didn't feckin' have. That was the whole bleedin' point! Anyway, after a whole circus of damnfool hoops jumped through, over a period of several months, HSBC graciously awarded me a basic account. I've used this ever since to pay one standing order, and to buy odd small items on Ebay with the debit card that they also gave me. I never keep more than forty quid in that account, and I reckon I've already cost them a lot more in management costs than they're ever going to be able to screw out of my account. So - small job done properly there. Sod the crooks at HSBC, and all the other bankers in the wunch. We're not here for their convenience. It's the other way about.
