Thornberry's mother was the Labour Mayor here. Very stout and jolly. She was quite popular in this Tory stronghold. The Mayors are chosen on a Buggins Turn system and there are a few Labour councillors.

There are food banks here now and a night shelter for homeless people. A strange contrast with all company wives driving their brat around in new up market 4x4s.

The council is useless. We once had a borough funded orchestra, a museum, an art gallery and so on. All gone. Back in the 80s, the Civic Hall (where the orchestra's concerts were held) was demolished and a giant grey shed replaced it. The Civic Hall staff were council employees who ran it well. The replacement was paid for by the council ie the council tax payers, but the management and control were handed over to an outside entertainment outfit so the programme now consists of low grade comedians, B listers and tribute bands. Truly dreadful.

The same happened to the sports facilities. A new leisure centre replaced the old swimming baths. Paid for by us but managed by an outside leisure outfit with their own staff. Not sure how the finances operate. We do still have a lovely park with children's play facilities which is so far untouched by privatisation.
