Quite a murky set up. Public, private etc. The acquisition of the Horizon IT system proved to be disastrous for the postmasters and staff who used it. Some even went to prison for false accounting and have criminal convictions which affected their chances of further employment for many, A scandal. Its large premises were sold and it became Poundland! It moved to another large premises in a good location for access. Six or seven counters were available. Now that has been closed and it has been moved to the first floor of WH Smith with a staircase one way down and an escalator up. The Smith's branch is downhill at the bottom of the High Street, difficult for the elderly and mothers with prams etc. and nowhere near a bus stop. The High Street is pedestrianized so a disabled badge for a car driver is useless. No wonder the use of the internet is taking over from the postal service. More on Royal Mail itself later! |
