PM urged to uphold Australian sovereignty
In Open Letter, Leading Domestic and International Figures Warn PM Against Pandering to Britain and the US
[Sydney, AU] — More than 50 lawyers, academics, journalists and others urged Australian PM Scott Morrison today to uphold the country’s sovereignty by intervening to resolve the medical and legal crisis of Julian Assange, publisher of WikiLeaks.
Assange, whom UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Nils Melzer reports has suffered severe abuse, faces extradition to the United States for publishing classified documents that exposed its conduct in war and diplomacy.
This comes after more than 100 doctors [@Doctors4Assange] petitioned the UK home secretary to transfer him to hospital — a call they have now repeated and also directed to the Australian foreign minister for intervention.
The list of prominent signers includes journalists Brian Toohey, Wendy Bacon and Mary Kostakidis as well as Daniel Ellsberg, the American a whistleblower whose revelation helped to end the Vietnam War. Also listed are human rights lawyers Julian Burnside QC and Kelly Tranter, and Emeritus Professors Frank Stillwell and Brian Martin. Sydney resident Simon Floth organised the effort.
“Journalists around the world are standing in solidarity with Julian Assange who has been subjected to long-term persecution, isolation, and denigration,” said Bacon. “If the espionage indictment succeeds, it will demonstrate that any person including any journalist of any nationality, anywhere in the world can be dragged off to front court in the United States for exposing its war crimes and other abuses of power.” Bacon is an Investigative journalist and former Professor of Journalism at the University of Technology, Sydney.
Floth, who led the effort said, “This resulted from international law and the Prime Minister’s duty being ignored and obscured…so clarity and focused demand are crucial to save Australia’s most famous citizen.”
