Lang himself rejected the film for similar reasons outlined. The writer and Lang's wife (later divorced), Thea Von Harbou went on to make films for the Nazis, some of whom greatly admired Metropolis. Here's a tip for those whose inclinations include riffling through second hand bookshops. In the late 20s and early 30s there was a series of books published by Readers Library. Most are cheap reprints of famous works, but the publisher also put out some attractive photoplay editions, including ones for the missing film, 'London After Midnight', plus 'Bride of Frankenstein' and both Thea Von Harbou's 'Metropolis' and 'The Girl in the Moon'. The vast majority of Readers Library editions are worthless and priced accordingly, but the aforementioned titles are highly sought after, command good money in dust jacket and although a tad scarce, are normally priced as per the worthless ones. Anyway, should you stumble across one, it could help significantly with the rent.
