apologies for silence.. We had a fire start, from lightning, 48 hours ago when it spread uncontrollably with strong winds and 42 degs, but not in our direction fortunately. A young firefighter was killed when the fire truck he was on was lifted up and thrown by a pyro-tornado from the fire they were following. Something quite strange in these events, of which there were several yesterday. A wind change on NYE brought cool relief, but for us a blanket of fresh smoke. It reminds me of good old England in the '70s, with red sunsets and "morning mist", "heat haze" and that smell of ozone from the smog that used to blanket all of Europe. Coming here in the '80s I could hardly believe that air could be so clean - it was normal to see mountains 100 kms away as clearly as those nearby, and a blinding white sun as it set. I'll keep you updated, and on my current rants on how our "defence forces" should stop lighting fires in the M/E and start fighting them here! Onlyl today has it been announced that defence assets will be sent to help save 7000 people on the beach in Malacoota... BTW - Happy New Year, in two hours..!
