The word "rape" should be confined to the act of rape. Archived Message

It gets diluted when used in other contexts such as "The EU raped Greece". No, it didn't. Though it certainly pillaged it. When you use it like that you've joined the ranks of those who use the slur of "anti-semitism" to denigrate left wingers. Or their buddy here on the LBN who frequently uses the shout of "racist" to ludicrously score points - thus diluting the all too real crime of racism and crapping on the all too many real victims of racists. Meanwhile - Small demo outside Cypriot Embassy yesterday. March to Downing St/Foreign Office. 40 demonstrators and 20 journalists/camera crews or so. Mainly women. A Palestinian flag n a few folk with Pal badges n scarves. An Israeli camera crew. The main issue for most of the demonstrators was the rape. I suppose that's understandable. It's an extremely shitty act. But it had me wondering how a banner linking in Assange would have gone down. Mind you, Women Against Rape are very sussed and do support Assange and for all I know were present at the demo. Maybe I'm a little pissed off at not feeling able to join in with the chant "Women united will always be free". The problem isn't men. It's power and politics. If it was a man who had been gang raped in Cyprus the result would have been the same. Though I do understand where the demonstrators are coming from. And they should support each other. There was only one banner referring to the recent Israeli-Cyprus trade deal. Anyway, good on them all for turning up - it was windy and cold - and roaring "Boycott Cyprus" helped to warm me up a bit. Should have tagged "Boycott Israel" on to the end of it. Got very good coverage on LBC. Actually said where & when it was on (That got me dashing out the door.) And then they went and interviewed several rape survivors later. Nothing on BBC4. ... Just listening to some idiots on LBC talking about how women shouldn't be going drinking on their own. Shades of that judge blaming the wearing of short dresses...
