Guardian leads the way with an identity politics critique - accusing Britons of being racist and misogynist in their treatment of Meghan. In a way, Meghan shows a healthy instinct to recognise and want out of the 'toxic' Royal cage. But she also seems to be a naive fame and attention-hungry celebrity set to make a fortune trading on the royal name with no qualms about becoming a "feminist", "humanitarian" Royal Kardashian with a range of products ("Walmart with a Crown on", as her own father predicts). None of the fuss around Meghan includes analysis of what the monarchy actually costs, signifies and does. One thing the monarchy does extremely well is serve as a highly effective 'soft power' that 'captivates the world' via the pages of millions of glossy magazines around the world. The Royal babies, pretty dresses, dashing military uniforms and dear old Grandma all plug into the human psychological weakness for fantasy and comforting narratives. These human interest stories - with added glitter and myth - help Brand UK punch above its weight and - more importantly - camouflage the more sinister role of the UK in the world: its arms dealing, military interference and crimes committed side-by-side with the US ... and its slick military/private propaganda outfits that dominate and skew world media.
