Thanks Mary. I did consider not coming back to this craphouse and remaining in my hammock in a mangrove tree on an almost empty beach by the sea in paradise but it would have been complicated for various reasons. The decider in the end was the deteriorating visa situation.

I luckily caught the very last Thai Airways flight to London. My original Eva Air flight was cancelled with no new flight or remuneration offered, phonelines jammed, emails ignored. Suvarnabhumi airport was almost empty of people, with most flights cancelled and hundreds of empty planes parked with engine caps on. We were the last guests to leave our hotel in Bangkok which was laying off all the staff that day and closing for 3 - 6 months - it’s normally open 365 days a year and full up but no customers now. The Chao Phraya river was empty of all boats except the tugs pulling the huge industrial barges four at a time up river every 5-10 minutes day and night. Ominously all of the barges were empty of goods.

In Bangkok all the air pollution has vanished! Unbelievable! Hardly any planes in the air or cars on the road and the air was actually fresh, especially near the river. The tiny number of people on the streets were all wearing the useless masks but no sign of panic buying.

Everybody on the very full A380 was wearing masks until the nosh and booze was served and off came the masks. Masks on again when eating finished. This ridiculous pantomime was then repeated at breakfast time 2 hours before landing.

    Here ends todays travel bulletin!

Sorry to hear about your best wheelbarrow being nicked - I hope you find another one just like it
