She has outed Sir Simon McDonald, Craig Murray's old boss at the FCO incidentally, and Hancock and the multiple contradictions (lies) about the PPE procurement from Turkey. McDonald 'misinformed' the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Laura Kuenssberg @bbclaurak Sir Simon retracted which is unusual enough - worth remembering EU schemes have so far not delivered vital kit, but... @BBCPolitics · 10h Top civil servant says he was wrong to claim the UK took a "political decision" not to join an EU scheme to source medical equipment https://bbc.in/2RRefsP 11:21 pm · 21 Apr 2020 · 9h Replying to @bbclaurak Sources part of Cobra talks at start of pandemic say there were conversations about working with EU where Health Sec acknowledged sensitivities of doing so - one says he was urged to put politics aside, and minister there says there was added dilemma about anything to do with EU
9h But sources close to Health Sec strongly dispute there were any Cobra discussions about the specific EU schemes and are adamant ideological considerations were not part of any of the process
There is a copy letter on the thread from McDonald.
This is the Heil's report.
'Top civil servant is forced into embarrassing U-turn after claiming ministers made a 'political decision' to DELIBERATELY snub EU schemes to buy PPE – and now accepts Downing Street just missed the email Sir Simon McDonald made the claim to MPs in remote committee meeting today It directly contradicted previous explanation offered by Downing Street Matt Hancock later said that the civil servant's version of events was not right Health Secretary: 'There was no political decision not to participate in scheme' Today Sir Simon wrote to Foreign Affairs committee chair to say he was wrong'
Isn't it very telling that McDonald still has a job at the FCO as 'Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Head of the Diplomatic Service.' He, with Straw, did for Craig's job when he was the UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan.
