The money raised is for NHS charities not to fund the NHS directlyArchived Message

NHS charities, now grouped under the umbrella body of NHS Charities Together, distribute funds to hospitals by way of buying equipment, new toys for children's wards, books for libraries, support for specific services etc. The money is really for extras and not for the general operating budget.
Incidentally, Mary, why are you so unremittingly unpleasant? This old guy had a hip replacement operation a while back, he was moved by the pressures on NHS staff as a result of the pandemic and wanted to do something to express his thanks for the treatment he received. I think he's quite remarkable - many elderly people, often a lot younger, are totally self-absorbed and don't spend an iota of time thinking about others - whereas he is clearly still very engaged with the world, able to empathise with people. I'm not sure why any of this merits such a lot of sneering.
