With Starbucks and Costa Coffee shut, farmers are dumping milk that would normally go into cappuccinos and lattes. It leaves Steven Marriott, a Blackpool-based haulier, without his usual cargo and with one of his two trucks off the road for the past six weeks.
His experience is typical of thousands of firms that the Road Haulage Association (RHA) says are “weeks away from shutting down forever”.
About 85pc of the sector comprises small and medium-sized enterprises that run on roughly 2pc margins, and the RHA estimates half the fleet is idle.
Nigel Evans, chairman of the Transport Association and managing director of Devon-based Evans Transport, says his company is functioning at 65pc of normal turnover, due to its reliance on the construction sector, which has ground to a halt....Paywall for the rest of it.
