to say, whilst still clearly of sound mind, that no, I don't want to be kept lingering just nominally alive when all quality has gone, when I'm doing nothing useful but, on the contrary I'm a burden on society, and I'm only being kept going because the technology is there, and we have a culture of excessive commitment to the idea of keeping even ancient, worn out bodies going for as long as possible no matter what.

I have little doubt that many more would think like me and would sign the document - especially if I could get the coup-de-grace injection that ended my step-father's life quietly when he was just hours away from finally stopping in a painful lung-cancer death.

I always do it for my beloved dogs when it's clear that they are suffering more then enjoying life, grievous though it is, and I really hope someone does it for me when the time comes, like that gutsy young teenage nurse - greatly respected to this day for her courageous resolution - who did it for my step-father.
