Was talking about this 'land army' stuff with the other seasonal workers at the farm I joined about a month ago, and we came to the conclusion it's basically a bailout for the supermarkets and the unsustainable UK agricultural system. It's hardly comparable to 'dig for victory' if all you're doing is picking a high end product for minimum wage, keeping exploitative agribusiness in cheap labour and maintaining Tesco's profit margin... They said it was common, especially for 'underperformers', for farm managers to dodge the minimum wage obligation by saying people had worked fewer hours than they actually had. Not seen it corroborated, but there are these horror stories from Spain which suggest it's rife especially for undocumented workers:
Don't know much about the situation for (im)migrant farm workers in the UK, to my shame... Prince f*ing Charles obviously hasn't got a clue either. I
