Was the BBC right to use the "n" word in a news broadcast? Archived Message

The BBC has apologised after over 18,000 complaints were received, and one of their DJs has resigned. As I understand it, they reported a racially motivated attack on an NHS worker which left him badly injured, and in doing so repeated the language used, which included the offending word.

I'm not sure about this, whether they were right or wrong. They were indeed accurate in repeating this term of offence, and perhaps it would bring home the racial nature of the attack. Or should they have simply said, "racist abuse" or "racial slur"? I don't know.
