Once again Steve Bell does the work other fraudian journos don't Archived Message

or at least says what they might be thinking but feel they shouldn't be writing. No wonder they want to get rid of him.

I recently bought, second hand, every one of the 26 volumes of his collected cartoons and am reading through them in chronological order. Apart from the amazing art work and caricature, it's an interesting canned history of UK/US politics and I'm amazed how the cartoons remind me of the events behind them, even when they are fairly minor, domestic things. They also trigger quite a lot of nostalgia, not so much for the political events but for personal recollections of what I was doing "then" or "when that story came out". Quite bittersweet in some cases.

Another thing I noticed, while reading the cartoons from the "Militant" era where Kinnock was pictured as leading the witch hunt in his own party while Thatch and her crew of lunatics (never more accurately portrayed as in "Maggie's Farm") cheered on and manipulated him from the sidelines, was that these cartoons could have had the names changed and worked almost perfectly for the Corbyn era. Failing to learn from history and repeating the mistakes and all that.

My admiration for Steve Bell has gone up even though I thought that couldn't happen. I recommend any of the books and they are available for a couple of quid each from second hand sellers. Some of the later ones are incredible value given that they are full-colour, coffee-table sized volumes. He really has been on the right side of history for a long time and the fraudian will be massively diminished without his work.
