The 'smear' is the criticism of naivety in not recognising that this is where mandatory can lead. If such treatment is to be meted out in the name of public health protection, then it should be happening to corporate execs (food, pollution, pharma) who don't come quietly when required for questioning. And that is my (recurring) point - don't police the little people; focus on those who shape society, not merely live in society.
