Somewhere round here you'll find Dan shocked, shocked I say, that I might contest that viruses are the cause of disease, and in the very next sentence stating of course there are other environmental factors, or some such. I've talked with a few other docs. One v. enlightened German I met in France (an abdominal surgeon who had himself recovered from multiple metastases) "denied" this, but, let me reiterate, this is not the model taught in many countries at med. schools! It's not model of the originator of (real, actual germ theory). Pasteur on his deathbed is supposed to have said "Bechamp was right, terrain is all". Moreover it's the substantive notion that disease is caused by the virus (etc) that requires evidence - not the opposite. The accepted tools for this are known as "Koch's postulates": basically you isolate a microorganism, introduce it into living tissue, and if you can see how disease develops in that tissue, you've proved the sequence. But these are NEVER followed in practice because they never work! But sorry no RCT / net link.
