For background, the most I've found out about Chinese history has come from Lev Gumilev (d. 1992) in Ethnogenesis and The Biosphere http://gumilevica.kulichki.net/English/ebe0.htm - a deeply ambitious, incredibly erudite work, brilliantly written. And Searches For An Imaginary Kingdom by the same author.
