I read a short-story in the 70s about a regimented society which had a colony of dissidents and drop-outs (on the coast?). The drop-outs made gigantic Heath-Robinson contraptions and each year the media went to the place and the dissidents put on a show. I think that the protagonist sees through this and decides to get out of the boat and split from the whole fcucking programme (thanks to Apocalypse Now!).
I was reminded of it by the discussion of XR below and wonder what I'd make of it now but don't know who wrote it or what it's called. Can anyone help? Regards
