Norilsk Nickel is known as one of Russia's most polluting companies, releasing approximately 1.67m tonnes of harmful sulphur dioxide every year into the air, according to 2018 figures.[20] Ore is smelted on site in Norilsk. The smelting is directly responsible for severe pollution, including acid rain and smog.
