They are shallow environmentalists, suckered into the belief that there are green technofix solutions to environmental problems. As corporate capitalism is the only game in town, they feel that they have to go along with it in order to achieve these solutions. 'Green' technology is not clean, it depends on mineral mining and fossil fuel inputs. It is fanciful to expect it could ever replace fossil fuels, certainly not to deliver present western lifestyles to future westerners, let alone to non-westerners and to an increasing population. The most it could ever do is provide additional sources of energy and thus additional growth potential and profits for the usual suspects. It is a panacea for saving capitalism in the short-term at most. Many western environmentalists, however opposed to capitalism in theory, are still wedded to the lifestyles that it brings. They want green technology to deliver so they can avoid making a full commitment to the fundamental systemic change that is needed.
