"Meanwhile I don't understand why the terms of endearment like love and darling are demeaning. As it happens women have used both of these terms for yonks (perhaps more than men, and to each other)." I would never use any these with anyone I know but not because I think they are offensive: more because they come across as smarmy. People using them in public with people they don't know is more a "cheeky chappy" thing from the previous generation than an attempt to demean. "I can see that babe can be offensive ... also a tad old fashioned : )" Dunno why. "babe" might be a bit long in the tooth these days but it did mean an attractive and desirable young woman. Friends and partners have all kinds of light-hearted and familiar ways of addressing each other: I say fuwck the thought police.
