Thanks Spike. I did watch the video. I completely agree with you - the management of covid 19 has been appalling - and has certainly led to the harms you list and no doubt many others - all of which could have been mitigated with planning and action. The kakistocracy don't care and are profiteering and exploiting the situation and are on the record as willfully using fear. I'm sure they are engineering fear by intentionally confused messaging and outright lying. It is a manageable situation. Contributing to the confusion are videos claiming the pandemic is no different from usual viruses. In my experience this virus is very different from the principle cause of severe viral pneumonia - influenza. I think the video uses a selective reading of the data to fortify an entrenched opinion in support of a laissez faire position. In the graphs shown the area under the curve may be the same but the time course is very much shorter - which as I've said here means that all the sickest patients arrive in hospital at the same time and resources are overwhelmed. It's not possible to provide a health service when 90% of beds are filled with acute covid respiratory infection. I know this hasn't happened outside of London but it very much did here - for several reasons - including a relatively later lockdown but also increased deprivation, larger immigrant populations and I'm certain the london underground. Here is Spiegelhalter who cummins selectively quotes. "So, roughly speaking, we might say that getting COVID-19 is like packing a year’s worth of risk into a week or two. Which is why it’s important to spread out the infections to avoid the NHS being overwhelmed." https://medium.com/wintoncentre/how-much-normal-risk-does-covid-represent-4539118e1196 It's clear, whatever data are shown, that it is possible to manage the spread of this illness with public health measures as instituted most convincingly by South Korea. There, there has been a recent resurgence focused on a rightwing church in which the leadership and membership refused to socially distance or wear masks and obstructed attempts isolate the congregation and to track and trace contacts. No doubt they were sharing Korean Ivor Cummins videos. Cummins rather blows it at the end with some plot hole/ass covering. He accepts that there may be a bigger seasonal mortality this winter than expected but claims people trying to control the virus will be to blame and have blood on their hands - nice touch. His explanation for the increased mortality - that the virus hasn't had the chance to spread naturally over the summer because of the measures implemented ....which he's spent the previous 20 minutes claiming have no effect on spread. Which is having a large cake and eating it. Either the spread of the virus can be controlled, which might then contribute to higher seasonal mortality, or it can't in which case the higher mortality is because the virus is not following usual rules. Control of the rate of spread is clearly possible, and this virus is worse than seasonal flu. Nothing that couldn't be managed by a competent health service the breakdown of which is being exploited by spivs and self publicists to generate profit. As the data of 200,000 deaths due to austerity show this government will be unconcerned with any number of preventable deaths from corona and untreated cancer/cardiac illness and suicide. There have been several reports in my wife's extended medical social media contacts of doctors being reinfected with corona virus in recent weeks. If true, and anyway the next 6 months are going to be very hard. I wish you the best. Peace and love, dan x
